Chinese New Year

The Chinese calendar is a combination solar/lunar calendar. The New Year starts on February 3 and is the year of the Rabbit (I was born in the year of the Rabbit). Chinese families gather for a 15 day celebration where they clean house, decorate, give gifts, and prepare food.

Food carries a lot of symbolism during Chinese New Year. For example:
  • Oranges symbolize good fortune
  • Dumplings look similar to ancient Chinese coins
  • Lettuce sounds like "growing fortune"
  • Fish sounds like "abundance"
  • Eggs symbolize fertility
  • Noodles symbolize longevity
  • Scallions symbolize intelligence
I was planning on making a small feast for Rusty and I on Thursday or Saturday, but our schedule has complicated matters. I think our meal will have to wait for next Saturday. Stay tuned as I finalize our menu!

Gong xi fa cai!
(Translation: Congratulations and prosperity!)
