The Chinese calendar is a combination solar/lunar calendar. The New Year starts on February 3 and is the year of the Rabbit (I was born in the year of the Rabbit). Chinese families gather for a 15 day celebration where they clean house, decorate, give gifts, and prepare food.
Food carries a lot of symbolism during Chinese New Year. For example:
- Oranges symbolize good fortune
- Dumplings look similar to ancient Chinese coins
- Lettuce sounds like "growing fortune"
- Fish sounds like "abundance"
- Eggs symbolize fertility
- Noodles symbolize longevity
- Scallions symbolize intelligence
Gong xi fa cai!
