I got my ears repierced right after Christmas in 2006. I had them pierced once as a child and once in college. When I was a kid, it didn't work because I tried to leave them out for a day and the back grew over a bit. I was too chicken to have someone push them through. I really wish someone would have just done it. I would have been fine. In college I tried again. They got really infected and I eventually gave up. I thought that maybe I just needed more expensive earrings that I couldn't afford.
Fast forward to me as an adult. My BFF got her ears repierced and it went well for her. I thought, I can do this too! I was excited. I've always wanted to be able to wear earrings. I got them redone and began my almost four year long struggle.
Rusty bought me some beautiful diamond earrings for Christmas. As soon as it was time to take my studs out, I wore the diamonds all the time. I even slept in them because I was afraid to leave them out. I still love them. Even though I was wearing gold earrings, I got infections. I cleaned and took care of my ears to no avail, but I was determined to see this through.

The second pair of earrings Rusty bought me were pearls. I switched to wearing these as I thought maybe smaller earrings would be easier, but I still struggled almost daily.

Finally I tried nickle-free earrings. This seemed to help for a brief period of time, but soon they caused drama as well.
I tried all sorts of things to help my ears...from one extreme to the other. Nothing has helped completely. There are times where I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, but I'm quickly proven wrong. Lately whenever I take my earrings out it is a HUGE struggle to even get them back in! So frustrating.
Last night I was trying valiantly to get one in when Rusty walked by and asked what was wrong. I told him, "I think I'm done trying to have pierced ears, but I feel bad because you bought those beautiful earrings." He said, "Don't worry about that. It's ok if you are done." Good man! I quickly took him up on that and took out the earring that was still in (and it bled upon removing it, of course).
I'm an earring dropout. Tell me I'm not a whimp/loser? I mean, I did try to become an earring person for almost four years. Four years of pain, drama, sores, bleeding, infections, and frustration.

You are not a wimp or loser! Mine give me fits all the time too but are better in recent years.
ReplyDeleteIf you are interestd, if you go back to the store wear Rusty bought the earrings they will often let you trade up or will apply the value of your earrings (or whatever producted) to a new item. We've done it at Kay Jewelers and Helzbergs and both gave us a fair (very fair!) trade up.

Not a wimp, or a loser!
ReplyDeleteI got my ears pierced for the first time ever a year ago last April, and they still give me trouble, but not nearly as bad as yours! I left my earrings out for a few days and had to really push to get my earrings in! It's frustrating.
If you were a wimp, you wouldn't have given it such a valiant effort for so many years. I think I probably would have given up way before you if I'd had that much trouble. OUCH!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the love, girls.
ReplyDeleteYou pretty much described my first 10 years of pierced ears (got them pierced for my 6th birthday), well, minus the diamonds and pearls! In high school I discovered http://www.simplywhispersstore.com/ and was AMAZED that I could wear even cute and trendy stuff with NO issues whatsoever. They are nickle free plus free of all kinds of other stuff, the only truly hypoallergenic earrings I ever found. (Interesting enough, once my ears were healed, I've found a very few other earrings that I can wear for limited periods of time without issue, but anything besides SW too long and I'm right back where I started.) Wish I would have known of your struggles before you became a "dropout" ;) but I'm LOVING your sweet hubby's attitude!!! {hug}
ReplyDeleteI tried them for a few years, Jenni. They didn't improve my issues much at all! :(
