Ingredients 101: Chili Paste

I plan on adding something new to my weekly Taiwanese Tuesday posting - ingredient substitution information. Some ingredients can be hard to find. I am willing to go to multiple stores to find ingredients, but I don't expect everyone to do the same. I will be going back through my recipes and link to each ingredient that I feature. Here is my first installment.

Chili Paste

Option A.  I like to use chili paste to spice up my dishes. It has wonderful flavor and heat - a little goes a long way! My favorite brand is Sambal Olek.

Option B.  If you cannot find chili paste, you can make several easy to find substitutions. You can use one or two (or more if you really like it hot) dried red chili peppers. To use, simply break peppers into two pieces and throw them into your wok/skillet.

Option C.  The other easy substitution is simply to add some crushed red pepper, to taste. Most people have that in their cupboards already!

  1. I like the new addition! I'm all about substituting, but wouldn't know where to start with Asian dishes. :)

  2. This is super helpful for me, since some of the ingredients are different here in Canada. Or called by different names! Looking forward to learning more!
